Quarry Mill provided excellent Balestrand stone veneer for our new construction! This was a big project for us with a lot of planning for the home we had always dreamed of. Balestrand is a colorful ashlar-style natural thin cut sandstone veneer. The stone is typically installed in a random ashlar pattern, showcasing the mixed heights of the individual pieces.
Balestrand has an unusual amount of color variation for a stone from a single quarry. The different colors come from how tightly packed the layers of stone are within the ground and the soil composition above it. Tighter-packed natural layers of sandstone generally produce stone with less color variation. The tighter layers reduce the amount of rainwater penetration. Conversely, looser layers of stone have more color variation due to the deposit of minerals over time from the soil above.
