Ottawa is a unique splitface quartzite natural thin stone veneer. Splitface quartzite is extremely unique and rare, in fact, we are one of only a couple of quarries that offer such a product. The reason quartzite is rarely available in the splitface style is due to the hardness of the stone. Even with 300 tons of pressure, the hydraulic press struggles to break the natural quartzite that makes Ottawa. Ottawa measures approximately seven on the Mohs Hardness Scale. To put the hardness rating into perspective, Ottawa is just above the hardness of a steel nail and will scratch window glass. Creating the splitface exposes the interior of the quartzite slabs. The interior brings out the raw color of the stone, showcases some veining, and has an almost glassy appearance.
